Event Details
The world worked together to ban CFC’s (chlorofluorocarbons) which were a major factor in creating the hole. CFC’s were widely used in refrigeration, air conditioning and aerosol sprays. The date for The International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer was chosen to commemorate the date the ‘Montreal Protocol’ was signed in 1987.
To commemorate the signing of the Montreal Protocol on September 16, 1994, the United Nations General Assembly declared September 16 as International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. Since then every year September 16 has been dedicated to the importance of preserving the protective ozone layer.
