Who are Switch the Play?
In a world enamoured with the dazzling universe of sports, what often goes unnoticed is the journey of sportspeople once they step outside the limelight. The transition from high-octane athletic life to a mainstream lifestyle can be overwhelming. Yet, every sportsperson holds within them an ocean of potential waiting to find a new avenue of expression. It's this essential transition that the Switch the Play Foundation ardently supports.
Established in 2014 and gaining charitable status in 2020, it stands as the UK's sole charity dedicated to aiding all sportspeople transition smoothly into life beyond sport. The senior team includes CEO, Rob Young MBE - whom some of our members may remember from our recent Employer Support Group - and Includability Ambassador and Wellbeing Verification Partner Matt Lock who became Athlete Services Manager role for STP earlier this year.
What is Switch the Play’s Impact on UK Sport?
The inception of Switch the Play was spurred by a diverse mix of individuals - sportsmen, sportswomen, seasoned practitioners, academics, and business professionals. They not only comprehend the emotional whirlwind post the curtain fall on a sporting career but also recognise the requisite to empower individuals to tread a new yet rewarding path. This sentiment is firmly anchored in their vision, which aspires towards a world where every sportsperson is capacitated to fulfil their potential at every life stage.
The ethos of Switch the Play centres around delivering a robust duty of care both within and beyond the sporting sphere. Their “prac-ademic” approach, a harmonious blend of practical and academic insights, ensures a broad-spectrum perspective in devising the right solutions. A testament to their impactful work is reflected in their substantial outreach - 79 masterclasses and webinars, a vibrant community of 180 Switched-on members, and 1066 beneficiary attendances catering to athletes from various clubs, organisations, and governing bodies.
